The Stefan/Elena/Damon relationship is one of the rare times that the triangle idea works on all levels, enough that it is difficult to even pick a side. Often when shows introduce a love triangle it feels like a contrivance to keep the "real" couple apart or it ends up just being a distraction from the action. Somerhalder adds the spark to the show with his evil, flirty, snarky, and possibly redeemable Damon, brother to Stefan. Wesley and Dobrev as Stefan and Elena are an appealing couple not only are they a strong partnership when they are together, but they are fully realized characters when they are apart.
The first thing the show did right was to cast Ian Somerhalder (previously of Lost), Paul Wesley and Nina Dobrev as the lead characters and the show's main love triangle. It was a weekly dose of intriguing characters and speedy plot twists. While the two stories do share that much in common, I was more than happy to discover that The Vampire Diaries was actually far more than just that one storyline. Elena in turn brings out Damon's humanity, and Damon challenges her to break free of expectations. Elena, in narration, credits her relationship with Stefan for bringing her back to life after her parents' deaths, although a flashback in an earlier season reveals she had met Damon the night her parents died, and he helped console her. While Damon and Elena were shipped by many fans, partly due to Dobrev and Somerhalder's real-life romance, it was never obvious which brother she would end up with, if either. In her final scene, Elena - who has seemingly died - is greeted by the parents she lost prior to Season 1, saying, "That is the promise of peace - that one day, after a long life, we find each other again."
